Tips for a Functional Laundry Room

The laundry room might not feel like the most exciting room but how you organize it does make a big difference to your lifestyle. For all that washing and ironing isn’t your main goal, the easier you can make it, the faster you can get it done and out of the way. And, when your laundry room is easy-access and has an obvious system, your family won’t have an excuse for leaving all the work to you.
Having Good Appliances
First thing is first, make sure your appliances are in good working order. If your washer and dryer aren’t functional, check out a good appliance repair company.
Having a separate drier is a good idea if you have a lot of washing to get through. However, drying your washing this way is very energy consuming. Instead, you might consider adding proper ventilation to your room and using simple drying racks instead.
Washing machines are getting really quite fancy these days and between the machine that let you add a dropped sock just after the cycle has started to energy saving spins, it’s difficult to choose between models. The best advice is to take your time and think about your family’s needs. If you are raising several children with an appetite for messy play, a large drum and fast cycle would be beneficial; if it’s just you, a smaller machine would use less energy and be more efficient.
From ensuring that you have a properly vented drain for each of your plumbing fixtures to bringing a little color into an otherwise unloved space, your laundry room can be a small haven in your home.
Organization
Organizing your laundry system might not sound like a priority but, just as tidying your linen closet can show, when you have a neat arrangement, everything feels much calmer. Arrange all your washing powders and accessories neatly in labeled boxes on shelves for easy access.
Use separate baskets to split your laundry into categories: clean laundry for ironing, and several types of dirty laundry which might include, white, pales, colors and darks. By having these baskets, your family can sort their own washing. Even better when a basket is full, whoever filled it can put the whole lot into the machine.
Keep it Clean
While your laundry room will never be somewhere you want to hang out all the time, it should be a calming space that you enjoy being in. If you are already grumpy about having to do yet another load of muddy kit, there’s no need to make it worse with a poor environment.
As the laundry room is dealing with wet clothes and a lot of steam you do need to manage the moisture in the air. You can buy electrical dehumidifiers but you might start with simpler methods such as opening the window and circulating the air. Natural desiccants are also useful for drawing moisture out of the air.
Doing laundry will always be a chore but if you have a good system in place and your laundry room is well organized, it won’t feel too bad. The more organized your system is, the easier it is for the whole family to chip in.

My laundry room needs some help right now. My husband and oldest daughter likes to throw clothes on the floor when they need the dryer. It drive me insane. I just need to get some baskets to put in there and label them so they know where to put them when done.
