Sugar Cookies + Leaf Hunts {Family traditions}

Fall baking continues in our home as we whipped up some easy store bought sugar cookies and cut out some fun fall shapes. Leaves, acorns, pumpkins and furry critters filled the counter as we cut and decorated the day away. The sky was briefly clear of rain making it also the perfect day to collect leaves, so Ashlyn and I also went on a leaf hunt!

Sugar Cookies

I love rolling the dough, it just seems pleasing to watch it spread evenly and smoothly, waiting to be cut into anything you dream up.

Emily really enjoys the cookie cutting part. Its so satisfying turning dough into shapes!

Look at all these cookies! We used yellow, orange and brown. Sometimes making too many colors is just too much for a quick cookie project, so usually I like to use about 2-3 colors.

Jack-o-lantern faces on pumpkins was all Emily’s idea. Her piping is getting better and better the more we practice!

Ashlyn always joins in, it doesn’t matter how easy or hard the activity is, she always gives it a try. Cookie decorating is no different.

At first, she used to be frustrated, but with a lot of encouragement and practice, she now confidently pipes her own cookies!

Here are a couple of my favorites! Since I only used 3 colors, I used pop colors out of the colors I made for the stems and eyes. Sometimes using a coordinating color works just as well as the actual color you would have wanted (such as green for the pumpkin stem or black for the squirrels eye).

Leaf Hunts

When we finished decorating the cookies, we set out on our leaf hunt. We walked around the neighborhoods in our area until we found the perfect spot to collect our leaves. Ashlyn was so excited when we found this little hill and the whole area was just absolutely covered in leaves!

I don’t know if it could have been any cuter, especially because this Lady Eleanor & Co bow was as gorgeous as those leaves!

She slowly filled her basket with all her favorites. I will never know why some catch her little eye more than others, but it is such a joy watching her find all these special leaves.

Of course, plenty of silly playtime was necessary while we were there.

Arlo was so excited to run through the leaves!

Ashlyn tried to offer her basket of leaves to Arlo, but he was too busy discovering all these bright colors!

Look at all my pretty leaves mama!

When it was time to go, Ashlyn very happily threw around some leaves and announced that it was time for Leaf Man to blow in the wind (from her favorite fall book, Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert).

I gathered my own pile of leaves as well, since I’m planning on some fun art projects this fall including making leaf animals with the kids (inspired by the book Leaf Man). The beauty of fall leaves are just so inspiring to me! I hope my children grow share the same love for fall when they grow up, and that our time decorating cookies and collecting leaves is as special for them as it is for me.
