Moving Made Easy

Moving house is not without its stresses and strains. From choosing a property, selling a property and braving the dreaded property chain, things feel like they can go wrong at every turn. That’s why you need to have the low down on moving before you even start the process.

Think about what you want from the move and how you can make it work for you logistically. Whether you’re making a move across town or gearing up for a long distance trip with North American Van Lines you need the whole process to go as smoothly as possible.

In this short article we’re taking a look at moving home and how you can avoid some of the pitfalls that come during one of the most stressful life experiences.

Before the move

The first thing you need to do prior to your house hunt is to work out how much money you can borrow to fund your property purchase. You can learn more about mortgage calculators to arm yourself with the knowledge to find the most favorable interest rates. The more money that you have for a deposit, the better rate you can achieve. Never overstretch yourself and stick within your budget when you begin the search for your new home.

One of the key things you can do to make moving house as easy as possible is to get rid of as much stuff as possible. Be ruthless, throw away, recycle or donate anything that has seen better days, is just there for sentimental reasons or hasn’t been played with forever. If you thought packing up your kitchen and living room was time consuming just imagine how much time it’s going to take at the other end. Quite simply, the lighter you travel, the easier it is.

Treat yourself to a new bed, or sofa after the move but it’s the little things that take up the most time when you’re trying to find new homes for piles of paperwork, children’s fridge paintings and those shoes you no longer wear.

You should also do some early research into your moving company way ahead of time. You can pack everything up yourself and simply hire a truck and some help to shift everything or you can hire a company who will pack everything for you. If you’re moving long distance and have a lot of other preparation to do before you arrive, then this can be immensely helpful as a service.

During the move

On the day, make it as easy and logical for your packers as possible. Label bedrooms with numbers so your packers can write the corresponding numbers on boxes.

Make sure you have your go-to box with you on the journey. In the chaos of unpacking, you want to know that your important paperwork, wallet etc is with you. You will also need to take with you the items you’ll want for a first night, so throw in toothpaste and toothbrushes as well as bedding and pajamas for everyone. Save yourself the stress of cooking and scout out a takeaway pizza place to fill everyone up after a hard day spent unpacking.

Moving is stressful and it isn’t easy but with great preparation under your belt, the whole experience can be made as logical and as straightforward as possible. Make sure to pack everything you need for your first night in a separate box and keep that with you. Help yourself with a giant clear out and you’ll be in your new home in no time, glad you decluttered and ready for a brand new start.
