Laundry Room Organization Tips
Is laundry day your least favorite day of the week? Do you dread waking up and remembering that you’ve got a wash to put on? You wouldn’t be alone. By the time we’ve been doing it for years, laundry can become pretty unbearable. This is especially the case if our linen closets are overflowing and our laundry rooms are a right mess. If this is your reality, it’s no wonder you want to shut those doors and forget about these rooms altogether. Just sticking around for long enough to put clothes in the washer gives you a headache as it stands.
I recently did a simple linen closet organization post, and that has made my life so much easier! Doing the same in your laundry room can make your week so much better! You wont be dreading being in a well organized, clean, tidy room.
It’s fair to say that many of us treat our laundry rooms as dumping grounds. More than anywhere else in the house, this tends to be the area with nothing pretty in sight. It’s just a washing room, right? No one said it had to look good.
But, go figure that you could benefit in all manner of ways by getting organized here, too. While there’s no guarantee that you’ll come to love doing the washing, you can at least lessen the burden by taking care of the following in your laundry space.
Cull those cleaning products
First thing’s first; you’re never going to be able to tackle your washroom if you can’t get in there for cleaning products. We’re all guilty of buying various detergents and stain removers, using them once, and then keeping them. Throwing them away seems a waste, but perhaps they didn’t smell the way you had hoped. Or, maybe you’ve found a non-toxic laundry detergent or a new scent washing powder which knocks all your older products out of the water. Either way, organization doesn’t stand a chance if you don’t sort these out. Remember that you need to be cruel to be kind. Keep only the products which you use each time you do your washing. You could also keep a stain remover on hand if you think it’ll be worth your while. Other than that, put everything aside and either give it away or chuck it. Just clearing your sides off like this can have a transformative impact on the room as a whole. It can free up sides for easier laundry folding, and generally help you to breathe in this space again.
Install some shelves
Speaking of freeing up sides, you could also benefit from putting up a few shelves here. These are easy enough to install yourself, so you needn’t even hire anyone to take care of this. With these in place, you’ll find that you can both clear space and turn storage into an attractive feature. Investing in small baskets to put here can see you making those few remaining cleaning products look pretty nice. You could even invest in some mason jars and other attractive storage options. These will help you to do away with unattractive plastic bottles altogether. And, of course, a few framed photographs and fake flowers won’t go amiss either. With this one simple option, you could turn your laundry room from a functional space into somewhere you enjoy spending time. All you need to do is make sure that you keep those shelves clutter-free and good-looking from now on.
Find pretty ways to store dirty clothes
Speaking of pretty storage options, you also want to organize your dirty clothes storage. To keep things simple, you could opt to shove your laundry baskets into those cupboards you’ve just freed up. Out of sight is out of mind, after all. This at least saves you from facing overflowing laundry every time you walk in. You may find, though, that you can again turn your dirty washing into something of a feature here. Investing in a large attractive storage basket, for example, could do the trick. This can become a feature of your room itself. Select one large enough, and you could even hide those dirty clothes altogether. Or, you might want to go all out and have a little fun here. Putting hooks on the wall above your washing machine could see you hanging individual washing bags for each color of clothing. This can look great, and you can even make the bags yourself to save money. Drawstring options could also help you to hide that dirty laundry until you need to face it. The possibilities are there; you just need to consider which would work best for you.
Invest in foldable drying options
Of course, you can pretty this space up all you want, but you still need to dry your clothes here. Like it or not, that’s never going to look pretty in any way shape or form. But, you can limit the damage here by investing in options which you can fold away when not in use. A retractable mini clothes line would be ideal for this. Install it high enough, and this can even keep your floors clear at all times. At the very least, investing in a foldable drying rack can do the trick. These don’t always look the best while they’re out, but they’re easy enough to fold up and put away. You could even carve out some space for this between your machines and the wall. That way, it’ll at least be out of sight the majority of the time.
We aren’t going to make the impossible promise that you’ll enjoy doing the laundry. That’s too much to ask. But, you should at least find that you don’t mind spending time in the space half as much. Isn’t that all any of us can really ask for?

It would never occur to me to decorate a laundry room. But I can see how that would make the task more bearable.
