At times mother nature can seem very cruel, throwing some truly exceptional weather conditions our way – Thunderstorms, snowstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes, extreme weather has the ability to wreak havoc on our lives. But now the storm has passed and it’s safe to go outside, it’s time to assess the damage and get things back on track.

The first thing you want to do is give your property a thorough visual inspection, some things will be more obvious to spot than others, such as fallen trees or branches, but pay close attention to less obvious issues such as hail damage, broken tiles and damaged cables. Next categorize the damage by priority and get to work on the issues that are most pressing first – some things may look bad but are more cosmetic and can be left to be dealt with later.

There’s often a lot of debris after a storm, especially if you live in a rural area or are overshadowed by trees. Clear the garden, any pathways and the driveway of any leaves, sticks or trees that have fallen and clean out your gutters to avoid them getting blocked the next time it rains. Debris can be burned on a fire if you have space, composted if small enough or deposited in a skip to be taken away.

With your garden clear you can now assess any structural damage to your property. Check for any loose roof tiles that may lead to a leak, assess if any of the windows have been damaged and if you can see any serious issues call out a professional such as Fenster USA to assess your options – there are now a number of ways to repair broken windows without replacing the whole thing which can save you a lot of money.

Although a power outage is a sure sign of a cable issue it’s worth also looking up and giving your overhead cables a visual inspection. Some may not have been broken but may have branches leaning on them or hanging from them, in which case you will need to call out your power provider to sort out the issue before the cable inevitably snaps. Do not under any circumstances try to repair any broken cables yourself and do not approach them if you see them on the ground.

If your property has sustained any water damage from excessive rain or flooding then it’s time to look into getting a dehumidifier to dry things out and stop any mould growth or long term damage. If you can pinpoint the point of water entry then it may also be a good idea to try and fix this issue to stop the water damage happening again in the event of another storm.

Now that you have all the pressing issues and repairs sorted and you are back on track you can look into enhancing the outside of your home by fixing any cosmetic damage such as damage to your plants and garden and with a little elbow grease you’ll have your place looking tip-top again in no time.
