How to best utilize your garage
Locks, immobilizers, and other security measures weren’t very good in cars of the past. With simple mechanisms controlling these elements of the vehicle, people would have to go to extreme lengths to keep them safe, and this means that a lot of homes have a garage attached to them. These spaces often lack the insulation you find in the rest of the house, but will still provide some usable space, but a lot of people don’t use them for their car. To help you out with this, this post will be exploring some ideas to help you to transform this area into something which can be used on a regular basis.
Access & Infrastructure
Having easy access to your garage will be important if you’re going to be using it nice and often. Most of these structures will have two access points; the main door and a smaller door for humans. A company like Handyman Garage Doors can help you to add a new door to this part of your home, giving you access to features like automatic opening, improved locks, and even tamper detection. As for the smaller door, it will be worth making sure that it is nice and secure, but this is something which many people will need to work on. Most garages will already have lights and electricity, but this might need to be installed.
Choosing A Purpose
Picking a purpose for your garage will be the first step you will have to take on this journey, though this can be a challenge without some inspiration. There are loads of options, and you will need to choose something which will get some use, making the goal you set for yourself dependant on your life and the things you enjoy. You can find some of the more popular ideas below, but it will be worth thinking outside the box for this one.
A Games/Movie Room: With electricity and strong security, a modern garage can make a great place for some video games and movies. With plenty of room for a projector and screen, along with some comfortable sofas, these sorts of spaces are perfect for this sort of idea. You won’t need to make many modifications to the garage itself to make this work.
A Safe Play Space: When kids are very young, they won’t be able to play video games very well, and will need physical games to teach them about the world. Some foam mats, soft toys, and colourful decoration should be all you need to make your garage into a space which young kids will love. Of course, you have to think about safety if you take this approach.
A Hobby Room: Garages don’t need to be perfectly clean and tidy, as they aren’t part of your main home. This makes them a great candidate for a hobby space, especially if your passion involves making things. You will know what tools you want and need to make this work, though it’s worth keeping in mind that you can keep working on it in the future.
A Pet Area: Pets like cats, dogs, and other large mammals need a lot of space. If they can’t play or get enough exercise, they will get unhappy, and may even start to show signs of ill health. Some comfortable blankets, toys, and a bed should be all you need to create a sanctuary for your pets. Of course, though, you will know how you want to treat these animals.
Getting The Job Done
You will be able to manage most of the work which comes with this yourself. As mentioned at the start, though, it will be important to have a professional install your new garage door, if you decide to go down this route. You can find loads of guides around the web which go into great detail regarding garage conversions. This can help you to figure out the tricky bits, while also giving you some inspiration to improve the end result.
It can be costly to go through a process like this if you don’t use the right methods, and a lot of people assume that they can’t afford it when they look at the cost of materials. With the help of the internet, though, you should be able to do most of this work for free or very cheaply. Websites like Facebook’s Marketplace are great for getting your hands on furniture which people don’t want anymore.
With all of this in mind, you should be feeling inspired to start transforming your garage into something more useful. With cars becoming more secure, there is less need for a space like this, and most people could be using it for something else.

A multi-purpose garage sounds great. I wish we could transform ours into something like that, too.

These are all great ideas on what you can do to best use the garage space. My garage is underneath the building I live in and it’s a common space, each apartment has it’s own parking space. Unfortunately I can’t use any of the space for anything else than parking my car.
