Home DIY with a twist

You’re either really DIY minded, or you just don’t have a clue where you should start. Being DIY focused isn’t something that comes naturally, but it is a desire that we all have within us. When you own your own home, you become your personal interior design artist, and ideas flow through your mind as to what you would like to do with your home. But do you always follow through with them? No, of course you don’t! If you’re not DIY minded, then you’re not someone who is just going to jump up and try and change your home. You will most likely sit and stew at the changes that need making, until you can find someone who is super handy at DIY to come and do something for you. But if you have that desire to do a little bit of DIY, or you’re someone who is passionate about keeping your home in perfect condition, then donning your scrubs and getting to it isn’t as hard as you think. All you have to do is take your time, follow a few videos, and make it a shared effort between you and the person you live with, or bring in family and friends for help! Once you get the basics mastered, you can think about doing some DIY with a twist, and here’s how we think you can do just that!

Mastering The Basics

Mastering the basics is something that you’re really going to have to do from the start. It’s hard to own your own home without knowing a few basic DIY tips, and they’re really not hard to learn. So the main DIY jobs that people do, is painting or wallpapering. It can be such a long task that takes days to do, but you won’t realize how badly your home needed it until you give it that first lick of paint, and you notice the color difference between the old part of the wall, and the part you’ve just done. The biggest thing to make sure you’re doing, is to sand down any lumps and bumps that have collected are gone, and you can have the smoothest of finishes. Then, all you have to do start layering on your paint. The trick is to not lather it on, but put and even layer on and wait a few hours for it to dry. People usually do a layer a day, and you want to try and aim for two or three coats, with a gloss finish or protection. As for wallpapering, you can do the exact same with sanding down any bumps, and then you’ll need a table and some wallpaper paste. Measure your wallpaper strips, and apply a nice layer of the paste on. The real technique comes when you’re applying it to the wall and creating the smooth finish. You need a sharp edge to run down the paper and secure it to the wall, and to get rid of any bubbles that might be lying behind it!

Thinking Of The Bigger Picture

So once you’ve got an idea of the basics to DIY, you can start thinking about the bigger picture when it comes to your home, and what you might want to do to improve it. But here’s where the twist comes in a little bit. Just because you’ve mastered the art of DIY, it doesn’t mean you’re going to be able to go around making all of the improvements you home needs. Sometimes you need to have a mix of you, and a mix of the professionals guiding you through. Windows for example, are something that might need updating on your home. They can just look so tacky and old when they begin to become a little weather, yet it’s so easy to get them sorted. All you’d need to do is go around the edge and paint where it might have become chipped away a little, both inside and outside. If you really wanted to dry some elite level DIY, you could get yourself a spray painter and work on the outside of your home to bring that colour out nice and fresh. This combined with a new set of windows, which by the way would improve the efficiency of your home, is all you should be looking for!

Fun Little Projects

DIY can’t be something that you find boring all of the time, or you’ll only get to a point where you seriously can’t be bothered to do anything at all. DIY has to be something that you find super fun, and there are plenty of little projects that you can start up that will get you excited. One that we think you’ll love, is the spare room project. Spare rooms all around the world are just being ignored and wasted, when they could easily be turned into the DIY project of your dreams. If you take a look on Instagram or Pinterest, you will see so many fun ways that you can transform a spare room, and the best one that we like is a tranquility room. Perfect for those days where you just feel like the world is on top of you. All you need is comfy furniture, but one idea we’re loving is a hammock going from one side to the other, obviously not to block off the rest of the room, and a giant bean bag you can climb inside of. Fill the room with relaxing and spiritual ornaments, such as Buddhas, and indoor plants in abundance, and you will be on your way to the perfect tranquility room. There are many more ideas that you could follow as well, you just have to look at social media websites!

Taking It Up A Level

Once you’ve had your fun with your home and you’ve completed a few little projects, you could take it up a level and start to think about the renovations that you might want to start. Obviously a renovation would not all be done by yourself, but you could get thinking about the design that you want, and who you want to do it for you. Renovations to the bathroom and kitchen are always the best!
