Farmhouse Style Guest Bedroom Makeover
This past summer I cleaned out the very messy craft room and converted it into a fresh, welcoming farmhouse style neutral guest bedroom. We have friends and family stay over multiple times per month, and shifting the kids and air mattresses just wasn’t working anymore. First I had to clear the clutter, and organize a lifetime of craft supplies into the tiny guest bedroom closet. Once the clutter was clear, I could design and create the perfect, cozy farmhouse style neutral guest bedroom.
Like most makeovers I’m my house, I start with a mood board that I create digitally. Here is my mood board for this room, its neutral and calming with a soft green wall color. You can shop the items from my style board here, and check out the transformation of this farmhouse cottage style guest bedroom below.
Room Color: Benjamin Moore – Vale Mist
Before & After Photos
The photo below to the left is this room when we bought the house. The photo on the right is the after photo, shown with my DIY vintage framed gallery wall.
After we moved in, the room was painted the same grey as the rest of the house (you can see the full home remodel here) which is the color I am painting over in the makeover below.
When selecting the color, for this room I really wanted a light farmhouse shade of green. Most of the home is grey, and I do like to have accent colors in the rooms of the house. I wanted to add a hint of green color, but keep it light and fit with the farmhouse look. I decided on a beautiful muted and light shade of green after sampling my top 3 choices from Benjamin Moore.
This room is very small, about 12×12′, so choosing a soft neutral and light shade of green was necessary to make the space look larger. I ultimately choose “Vale Mist” and couldn’t be happier. It’s light, muted, and has grey undertones. Sometimes a fresh coat of paint can really make a difference in a room transformation – sometimes that is all you need! For this room, however, the makeover includes more than simply paint. Furniture and staging is next.
I had been shopping for products to fit the space: a bed frame, mattress, nightstand, lamp, and bedding. I found the perfect distressed grey rug from Boutique Rugs, linked at the end of this post. I love the charm it adds to the room, and pulls the grey undertones from the green paint together. The rug looks lighter than in the listing, which is perfect because I really wanted it to be light and distressed!
Most importantly though, I needed an amazing bed frame. The room is small and I wanted the bed to be the focal point of the room. I fell in love with this dark bronze metal bed frame, linked at the end of this post. It has the perfect touch of cottage charm, is sturdy and practical and definitely stands out as focal point in the room. The bed arrived safely in two boxes, and only took about 20 minutes to assemble.
I am so happy with how this bed looks and feels in this room. There is so much farmhouse charm to this metal bed frame. The dark color contrasts well with the light color wall. I want this room to be super cozy when my guests arrive, so making sure I not only have a beautiful bed frame but a comfortable mattress as well.
To complete the guest bedroom, the bed just needed a few pretty bedding pieces. I found a very affordable and gorgeous ruffle bed skirt, added a ruffled quilt, and then folded a down comforter at the end of the bed in case the guest needs additional warmth – all of which are linked at the end of this post.
I love the contrast of the dark frame with the crisp white and light grey bedding. And for the accent wall, I hung a pretty print above the bed. Some of my favorite prints including this one can be found HERE.
On the bed I layered lots of ruffle pillows for extra cozy and neutral look to this room. Ruffle pillows are my favorite piece to add to cottage style bedrooms, they add so much charm! Next to the bed is a simple vintage nightstand I found thrifting, topped with a glass lamp and farmhouse style sea grass lampshade, both linked at the end of this post.
This is a small room just off the living room. Before the bedroom makeover, the space was a cluttered eyesore that I kept hidden behind a closed door. Now this farmhouse style neutral bedroom is pretty and inviting space that I love to keep open for viewing.
In the corner by the window I placed a large floor pouf for reading or just as a sitting area. I added another throw blanket as well. You can never have enough blankets or pillows for your guests. I placed an oval mirror at the end of the bed for the guests and to add interest to the room.
And on the other side of the bed, I removed the closet doors and instead I hung another pair of drop cloth curtains. This closet is full of the kids craft supplies and toy bins, so I wanted to find a creative and simple way to hide all the clutter. Drop cloth curtains are neutral and simple and so easy to hang, I love this solution for this bedroom.
With the room decorated and this cozy bed at the center of it all, I know my guests will love staying here. Since this farmhouse guest bedroom makeover, I have made a few changes to this room, like adding a set of white vintage lockers for storage and creating a DIY vintage gallery accent wall to add some additional cottage charm to this space. Happy decorating!
