Find Your Freedom: Backpack Around the World
Traveling isn’t a lifestyle choice so much as it is a compulsion. Once you have caught the bug, you will probably spend the rest of your life either on your travels or planning the next trip. The downside is that traveling costs a lot with transport costs, hotels and food.
But, if you are willing to rough it to discover some truly beautiful scenes and cities, backpacking can be a great option. While you might not be staying in 5 star hotels or sipping cocktails in fancy restaurants, backpacking often gives you an opportunity to see things you wouldn’t normally get to see. With just your backpack in tow, you don’t need to plan expensive flight or even book a hotel in advance – this is the best way to travel on a tiny budget and set your travel ambitions free.
Head into the Wild
One of the best advantages of backpacking is that you can explore the wilderness. Lots of national parks allow hikers to camp (either wild or on a site) and make the most of the landscape. If you haven’t done this kind of thing before, it’s best to have a practice weekend before signing yourself up for a sabbatical. You might also like to look at a site like Prepared Bee, which offers survival skills and tips.
Heading into the wild means that you can really explore the landscape around you. When you do day trips, you can only see as far as the car can take you. Backpacking offers a more submersive experience that can’t be matched anywhere else.
Plan Your Trip Carefully – Or Don’t
There are 2 ways to do backpacking. You could plan your trip carefully and follow a particular route or you could follow your instincts and go where your curiosity takes you.
If you are new to backpacking, a set route is usually best. Planning an interrailing trip across Europe, for example, is a lot easier if you know which cities you want to visit and how long you want to stay there for. As lots of travelers take similar trips, it’s often best to book hostels ahead of time too.
The alternative is more risky but offers a rare kind of freedom. Traveling according to whim can be a really cheap way to go too – simply pick the cheapest bus and see where it might take you. The downside to this is that you may not have much choice in where to stay when you get there.
Discover Yourself Too
One of the things you realize when your backpack is that you really don’t need that much to live a happy and contented life. You really can carry everything you need as long as you are willing to sacrifice a large wardrobe and live basically.
The real joy of doing this is discovering that there is so much more to your character than you might have realized. You are stronger, more independent and far more self-sufficient than you could have imagined. Make the most of it!
