DIY Fairy Garden Kid’s Birthday Party
Whats more whimsical than a fairy garden? A fairy garden birthday party! This year Ashlyn turned the big FIVE years old. She loves crafts and gardening and everything magical and whimsical so I decided to throw a Fairy Garden Party for her! I wanted her to be able to dress up and feel magical but also create something cute with her friends that she can treasure to remember her special day. Using some fun supplies and a little bit of prep work you can throw your child a DIY fairy garden birthday party, too!
To make this party happen first I needed the perfect invites to inspire the party. I turned to my favorite custom invite designed Invited By Audriana and she had the perfect lavender, blush, and gold fairy invite. I set the color scheme based on this invite.
I wanted to have lots of treats for the girls so I set out to make sugar cookies, cupcakes, and a naked cake. I am by no means a baker; I dabble with decorating baked goodies at my parties so the results are far from perfect, but its a great opportunity for me to do something fun with my girls and I enjoy the creative process. This was actually my first attempt at a naked cake! I typically use store bought cake mixes and frostings (while I do know how to bake from scratch, I find the store packs to be delicious and easy and cuts way down on my prep time so that I can focus on the decorating!) You can find my simple layer cake tutorial HERE.
The bunting is super simple to create as well. Cut 5 little triangles (I used my silhouette, but you could do it by hand) and I just cut a couple times until I found a size that looked right. Hole punch the top twice and run the string through and then tape to 2 long toothpick sticks (found in the grocery store by the paper plates and toothpicks). I wrote “fairy” with a sharpie. The cake is decorated with fresh flowers trimmed and placed just a couple hours before the party. They pulled right off when it was time to serve!
I also prepared cupcakes and sugar cookies. The cookies is where the real work came into play as I had to create 5 colored piping bags. The mix however is a large Krusteaz sugar cookie mix from Costco. The cookies always come out perfectly shaped with this mix! You can find pretty much any cookie cutter shape on etsy. I used a toadstool, tulip, and snail. I found that the Wilton Right Food Coloring System has been my best, easiest solution to color dye. The kit comes with every color needed to mix pretty much anything, with easy color mix instructions and easy to squeeze containers. I have had this set for a couple years and barely used any. A little goes a long ways! However, to achieve very dark rich colors you will need to use MUCH more than lighter colors. But the color always turns out great! Again, to save time, I just use store frosting. Not all varieties will yield the same result. I found that Betty Crocker vanilla is easy to work with for piping. I split 2 containers into 5 glass mixing bowls and dyed each one, then put them into piping bags. After I fill my bags I put them in the refrigerator for about 30min-1 hour to firm them up a touch, then they are ready to go!
The cupcakes were also a store mix and left unfrosted but I did find these adorable cupcake liners!
Snacks also had to be fun (and easy) so I went with heart shaped cheese (cookie cutter!) and toadstools made from a strawberry and marshmallow on a stick! Easy peezy!
The snack buffet looked so sweet! The bunting was made with my silhouette and the leaf garland was a fun find at Target’s One Spot!
I re-purposed one of the extra invitations to make a sign for the treat table.
These adorable crowns from Lo and Behold were the party favors. They are just darling!! I do not like giving out party bags with things the kids (and parents) will most likely just toss after the party, so I always try to give away something unique. And these crows were the perfect party accessory and gift! The girls were over the moon about them!
For this party I knew I wanted a tutu for my little fairy so I reached out to my favorite tutu shop Honeyskull and showed her the party invitation and asked her to match the party and surprise me with a tutu. And this gem is what she came up with- and it is absolutely AMAZING! Ashlyn was crazy happy to have this new gorgeous tutu!Â
Ashlyn was all dressed up and ready for her big day!
Finally, the fairy garden station! This was the heart and soul of the party. Everything was purchased from craft stores and hot glued on. The moms took on the task of the glue, while the girls picked and designed how they wanted their house to look. They were able to select a fairy, a butterfly, a toadstool, paper flowers, a faux cactus, some stick on wood ladybugs, a jar of fair dust (made with glitter and these jars) and the rocks for their terracotta saucer. The table was covered in craft paper and decorated with the Target leaf garland and some succulents.
I made an example garden for the girls to follow. Mine has a real succulent and a different fairy.
The party was just as fun as it was cute, and all the girls really enjoyed dressing a crown and building their very own fairy gardens.
Next came snacks, cake and presents. Ashlyn’s reaction to me bringing the cake to her was priceless!
All the little fairies had a fun time and Ashlyn was so happy that all her friends shared her magical day with her. I had so much fun throwing this party! And of course, seeing Ashlyn happy was all that mattered!
