DIY Vintage Hymnal Song Sheet Christmas Tree Ornaments
Hymnals are such a timeless part of Christmas tradition. You can hear the songs sung by Christmas carolers and in the homes of families throughout the holiday season. The tunes ring in nearly every holiday movie, reminding us all of the spirit of the season. They are also such gorgeous vintage pieces of history! I love these old songs so much, I decided to create some easy DIY Christmas Tree ornaments using the sheets from some old hymnals I picked up at a local thrift store. The cottage charm of old hymnal music sheets is so darling on a farmhouse style Christmas Tree – and it is so easy to DIY these old books into beautiful ornaments – you can whip them up in no time!
First, look for Christmas songs in some old hymnal song books. Sometimes they are in a Christmas section, other times you need to look for them by name throughout the book. Once you have found a few, CAREFULLY cut or tear them out from the books. They rip very easily, so gently remove them without damaging them!
I picked 4 songs for this tutorial. If you are not sure which songs to look for, here is a list of some classic Christmas hymnals:
- O Come, All Ye Faithful
- Joy To The World! The Lord Is Come
- Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
- Angels We Have Heard On High
- Christ Has Come
- Silent Night, Holy Night
- O Holy Night!
- O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
- Go, Tell On The Mountain
- The First Noel
- Angels, From The Realms Of Glory
- O Little Town of Bethlehem
- Away In A Manger
- What Child Is This
- Joy To The World (Unspeakable Joy)
Next, cut the sides and top to create an even, thin margin around the song. Sometimes the music will be only on part of the page or show only part of the song. You want to be sure the title is at the top of your cut. We will be making 5″ ornaments from these sheets from the title of the song. The full page songs will need to be cut off at the 5″ mark to make a square. After you have all your 5″ long sheets of music, cut the pennant shape from the bottom as pictured below.
You will end up with the hymnals in little shapes like these little banners below.
Here are my little banners all cut out from the hymnal sheets.
When you have all your little banners cut from the hymnals, grab your twine and some scotch tape. Flip the hymnal to the back side and tape the twine down to each side. Once the twine is attached, your DIY hymnal ornaments are complete!
This DIY is really easy, and looks so cute on the Christmas Tree. Here is a peak at mine on my tree!
I hope this inspires your own DIY hymnal Christmas tree ornament craft! If you can not find old vintage hymnal books while thrifting, I have linked some below that you can purchase online for your DIY.
