Create a Cozy Home with Wood Features

Wood has always been part of human civilization. The earliest example of woodworking we know of date back from the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Chinese. It’s fair to say that our prehistoric ancestors most likely learned to work wood too; unfortunately, it can be difficult for archaeologists to retrieve any older features. But, one thing is for sure: For as long as human beings have inhabited the Earth, wood has played a significant role in the design, decor, and safety of their accommodations.

It’s fair to say that our prehistoric ancestors most likely learned to work wood too; unfortunately, it can be difficult for archeologists to retrieve any older features. But, one thing is for sure: For as long as human beings have inhabited the Earth, wood has played a significant role in the design, decor, and safety of their accommodations.

So, it’s only natural to want to make the versatile and beautiful natural material one of the key features of your home sweet home. Ultimately, it’s fair to say that you can do a lot with very little. Wasn’t Noah’s ark entirely made of wood? Regardless of your view on the Bible, there’s no denying that woodwork was popular even in those old times. The first prehistoric men crossed the English Channels on a boat – which they made themselves. It’s easy to see that without wood, our society wouldn’t be what it is today. Indeed, despite its rustic feel and touch, you need to remember that wood has allowed civilizations across history to move forward, by embracing new means of transport, building new machines, and creating sturdy and reliable architecture and furniture. Perhaps it’s because it is intrinsically linked to the history of humanity that we love wood so much. There’s a sense of security, reliability, and peacefulness that emanates from the material. And that’s precisely what makes it the perfect ingredient for your cozy home sweet home.

Wood entry door

Add an old-fashioned wooden door

Iron doors might seem safe and sturdy, but they are not suited for the family home. They can give a cold and impersonal impression, which doesn’t fit the purpose of your house. Additionally, when it comes to curb appeal, it’s almost impossible to turn a heavy iron door into a haven of peace and coziness. You need the warmth and elegance of the wood to make your guests feel welcome. A heavy wooden door can give a grandiose touch to your entryway. You can also add a touch of color by painting the front door. Nothing pops more than a vibrant red, green, or blue door in an otherwise plain community! However, if you’re worried about making the space feel dark, you might want to consider a happy compromise such as mid century entry doors that come with lites. For a glamorous old Hollywood style, you’ll love the playfulness of circular lites that can bring your door game to the next level.

Replace old carpet with wood floors

While a carpeted floor can keep your feet warm, it never is a manageable solution in a family home with your children and pets. Have you ever tried to remove felt tips stains from a carpet? It can be a nightmare! Similarly, your high-quality vacuum cleaner might not be enough to suck all the pet hair out of the carpet. Instead, you should consider the pleasant elegance of a hardwood floor. Wood can make your floor the main point of focus in an unfurnished area, such as your hallway. Additionally, light wood can make the space feel bigger by reflecting the light, which is why it’s the perfect choice for a small kitchen or bedroom. Besides, you can create a rustic feel with a hardwood floor that displays a selection of knots and cracks, which adds coziness to your rooms.

Find or build a wood dining table

While plastic, marble, and glass are popular solutions for a family dining table, nothing brings the family together like a wood table. There’s something iconic about eating around a wood table; it was once the hearth of the household in the old years, and using the same type of material and furniture helps you to keep the custom alive. Admittedly, finding a quality table that doesn’t break the bank is another kettle of fish. If you’re confident in your DIY skills, you can collect barn wood and build your own table from scratch. Don’t panic, though! It’s a lot easier than you might think! Thick slabs, for instance, make the perfect table top with a little bit of trimming. Do remember, however, to seal the top with a protective coat of Varathane! If you don’t feel up to the project, you can find the perfect table in second-hand auctions, car boot sales, and preloved furniture shops. Check Facebook Marketplace for a choice of old tables!

Use reclaimed wood in your home

As a rule of the thumb, if you’re going to use wood for your furniture, you should try to stick to reclaimed material whenever possible. Indeed, reclaimed furniture is made from old timber which has been sourced from buildings that are being demolished. As a result, you reduce your impact on the planet by not buying planks of wood or items that needed to be manufactured for the purpose. Shipping pallets are another popular choice when it comes to finding contemporary reclaimed wood. But, with a little creativity, you could also transform an unused piece of furniture into something new – DIY enthusiasts call the process upcycling.

Use wood in your bathroom

If you’ve been struggling with a cold bathroom decor, you’ll be pleased to know that you can tackle the issue with wooden features. Indeed, provided the wood remains protected and maintained, it can become an eco-friendly choice in a humid environment. The natural warmth of the material can add a rustic and natural twist to a room that can be difficult to decorate. From wood flooring to countertop, you can switch your tiles for natural planks!

Create rustic decorative decor with wood

Last, but not least, wood has revived the chic bohemian style in modern homes. New crafters have fallen in love with its malleability. Sometimes, all you need is a little chalk paint to transform dull items into focal accents. You can welcome your guests with family portraits in painted frames, which gives your home a humble and caring DIY feel, for instance.

Wood, wood, wood. Bringing wood into your decor helps you to build a warm, comfortable and united environment for your family. From the door to the floor, you can decline wood in all its functions to make everyone feel at home!

I do love the wood-rustic look. It reminds me of home – which is Wyoming. Everything is wood/log-cabin like, and it’s just so comforting to me! Hopefully, my husband and I one day have a house that’s log-cabin like, because, well, as I said, it’s just cozy! Oh and WOOD FLOORS FOR THE WIN! Always!
