A Monochrome & Batman Toddler Boys Bedroom
Monochrome and wood are super trendy for kids bedrooms right now, and when combined with Montessori style organization you can create a simple and modern kid’s bedroom that you can keep clean! When our youngest, Arlo, first arrived, his nursery was shared with his big sister Ashlyn’s bedroom and the kids shared a large Montessori inspired playroom. A boy-girl shared bedroom and nursery worked well when they were little, but after 18 months we knew we needed to separate the kids. Emily moved out of this space and into the playroom, leaving this bedroom ready for a modern monochrome and Batman themed toddler bedroom refresh!
The reason we needed to give the kids their own rooms was primarily because their sleep schedules were never in sync, and we needed them to be accountable for their own messes in a clearly defined separate space. Sharing spaces resulted in many, many arguments over who’s mess was who’s, including who created the never-ending playroom mess. Everything just pointed to splitting the kids into 3 individual rooms, and doing away with the playroom. So we got to work cleaning and moving kids and painting to give each kid their own space. Now here is a look at Arlo’s monochrome and Batman themed toddler boys bedroom!
This room was previously Emily’s bedroom, it is the smallest of the 3 kids bedrooms but the perfect size for Arlo. It was a bright turquoise, so the first step was choosing the perfect neutral white paint color as the background for his monochrome and Batman toddler bedroom.
I sampled three Valspar colors that ranged from off-white to very light grey.
There were SO many whites to choose from! I decided on Valspar – Comet Dust and am very happy with the result. Its not as bright white as the trim; it is definitely very slightly light grey, which is exactly what I was hoping for.
Once the paining was finished the fun of decorating began! Here’s a tour of the finished monochrome and batman themed toddler boys bedroom.
It was important to create a space that invited Montessori play. Toys where Arlo can easily reach, and not too cluttered so he can pick something without digging for it.
One of my favorite brands of toys is Green Toys. The toys are simple, noiseless, inspire imaginative play, and are made out of 100% recycled plastic in the USA. I put his collection of Green Toys on this low cube shelf so he can easily see and choose one of his green toys to play with on his cute playmat rug. I love the high contrast of the black and white, it is simple and will be fun to play on for years to come. The little table and stool are from Ikea. Arlo loves to sit and play with his stackers and puzzles at his table.
At the time of this post we had our toddler in a crib, but you can check out our DIY toddler house bed tutorial and see his updated kid’s bedroom here.
The shelves above Arlo’s crib are the 21″ Mosslanda picture ledges from Ikea. I display Arlo’s special toys and cute decor here, like his custom ARLO blocks and these unique monochrome and wood pieces I collected for his room.
I used a mixture of wood, black, and white to pull together this Batman inspired bedroom. I did not want it to be overwhelmingly Batman, but a mixture of all the boyish elements that I think and hope he will love as he grows.
Another shelf holds more of Arlo’s toys. I started a collection of action figures for him to play with. Each morning he reaches over and picks one toy to bring with him for the day!
I needed somewhere to store and display all of his books, and the ikea spice Bekvam racks work perfect for holding board books. At bedtime its so easy to grab a book to read to Arlo. Of course, several books are from our favorite kids book subscription service, Bookroo.
There is a changing table dresser in this room, mostly to hold diapers and other necessities. The closet is where all of Arlo’s clothes are organized.
We removed the doors from the closet and installed a new closet system to better organize his clothes and some of the toys I want kept out of reach. These baby swaddles are some of my favorites from when he was a baby and I still love them even though we can’t swaddle him anymore. Those are definitely going into is memory box someday!
From sleep to play this room turned out to be such a great little boys room for my toddler. I had so much fun mixing and matching monochrome and wood elements to design this monochrome and Batman themed toddler bedroom for Arlo. I hope you enjoyed the tour of his room!

i! Congrats on your design, turned out very nice and pleasing to look at! Where did you get the monochrome rug? Trying really hard to find something exactly like that to match my son’s room design. I have a green Ikea onec although it doesn’t look terrible, it kind of throws off every other carefully selected piece of decor and toys I have. Thanks in advance!

This turned out SO amazing!! Love the color you had before but realizing it didn’t work with this plan…what you chose is PERFECT with your carpet and just the whole room. What a lucky little man he is! We love Green Toys too
