5 Amazing Ski Resorts to Visit in France

If you’re looking for somewhere to take an amazing ski trip, France is your best bet. There are plenty of other countries like Austria or Italy that have great ski resorts and they’re often a little cheaper, but people still flock to France every year because it’s the ultimate place for skiing with so many great resorts all over the place. Whether you’re taking a solo trip, going with the family or heading out there with your friends, you’ll be able to find a resort that suits you. If you’re planning a ski trip, these are some of the best French resorts to consider.

Tignes

If you’re a thrillseeker and you want to do some serious skiing, Tignes is one of the best resorts to visit. Tignes is made of 5 different villages that all have their own distinct character so you’ll get a different experience every time you go there. There is a wide range of different courses designed for different ability levels. So, whether you’re a complete novice or a seasoned skier, you’ll find a course for you. You’ll also find lots of adventure activities like a halfpipe, air bag jumps, and snow parks if normal skiing doesn’t give you enough of an adrenaline rush.

As well as all of the great skiing and snow sports in Tignes, it also has some of the best natural features that you’ll find in any ski resorts around the world, like the ice caves, for example. It’s ideal if you’re going with a group of people that aren’t that into skiing because there are plenty of other great things that you can do there.

Meribel

If you’re a beginner and there’s no way that you’ll be skiing anything apart from the green runs, Meribel is one of the best ski resorts for you. It’s a mostly English speaking resort so you don’t need to worry if you’re not great with languages either. There are plenty of green runs available and, while it’s fairly low lying, you’re close to other resorts like Courchevel if there isn’t enough snow. It’s filled with loads of quaint ski chalets like the Les Bartavelles Meribel that are well located so you’re close to all of the slopes. There are also plenty of great pubs and bars around where you can enjoy a drink in the evenings after a day on the slopes.

Gerardmer

More experienced skiers might get a little bored in places like Meribel that are more aimed at beginners. There are still some great advanced slopes there, but if you’re looking for a bit of a challenge, you might be better suited to Gerardmer. There are also some great campsites nearby so if you want you can combine your ski trip with a pop-up camper trip. Gerardmer also has a lot of snow machines so it’s ideal for people that want to take a ski trip in the off season.

Val d’Isere

A camping trip near Gerardmer is ideal for families or people that are looking for a relaxing nature trip, but it’s not the best place to go if you’re looking to party. In the past, groups of young people flocked to Spanish beach resorts but in the last decade, ski resorts have become some of the most popular party spots in the world, and France has plenty of great ones. Val d’Isere is one of the most popular part ski resorts in the world, especially with Brits and Americans. It still has plenty of great ski runs that you can explore during the day, but at around 4 pm, the whole place really comes alive. There are plenty of great bars and clubs where you’ll find top DJs and flowing drinks. Most of them stay open until 5 am so you can party all night, grab some breakfast and then hit the slopes again, ready to do it all again.

Chamonix

If you want a great party resort but you still want to see a more authentic side of the French ski culture, Chamonix is a good middle ground. Most of the party ski resorts are very seasonal and only cater to tourists, but Chamonix has a larger population of locals and is always bustling all year around. That means that there’s a lot more going on and you also get a bit more of an authentic experience. There are plenty of great bars and restaurants around that you can visit once you’ve finished skiing and there is a good live music scene out there as well.

If you’re looking for a budget ski trip, France isn’t always the best place to go but if you’re looking for the best ski resorts in the world, you won’t find them anywhere else.
